First Aid Training

First Aid Training

First aid helps ensure that the right methods of administering medical assistance are provided. Knowing how to help a person is just as important in emergency situations. The importance of First Aid is hard to overestimate. The largest benefits of First Aid are: It allows those trained with the potentially lifesaving ability to assist an injured or ill person during a variety of emergency situations. The purpose of first aid is to minimize injury and future disability.

Having a basic first aid knowledge means that they’ll be confident in their skills and abilities in relation to first aid administration. By taking first aid training, it helps you to reflect on their self and how they and others react in certain situations. Having this understanding will boost their confidence in a wide range of non-medical day to day situations.

First Aid Training Programs

Wounding, injury, nose bleeding and choking, may be some of the things we occasionally encounter sometimes, and to know how to react against is very important. First aid means the assistance given to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery. First aid helps ensure that the right methods of administering medical assistance are provided. Knowing how to help a person is just as important in emergency situations. Iran Medical Clinic has teamed up with Green Africa Global Foundation to facilitate the training on basic First Aid care to school children which can be practical both at school and at home. After three years working at different schools in special slum area, We have been able to interact with school pupils through the various free medical camps and green workshops we have facilitated in different schools. Through this, we have seen the need to sensitize the pupils with basic first aid information. During the visits to different schools by these two organizations, they realized that there was a challenge and a gap in basic First Aid care. This was discovered through questioning students on the matter but they could not respond correctly.

First of all it was very important to explain to the children the meaning of First Aid and the importance of learning first aid at their level. Also, they learnt about what is in First Aid kit and how to use them. The other thing that the students learnt were the basic principles of First Aid which include:
• To preserve life
• To prevent deterioration, and,
• To promote recovery

The basic first aid lessons trained to the students include:

In most cases, fainting occurs due to lack of oxygen in the brain. To ensure that this person gets enough oxygen, Position the person on his or her back. If there are no injuries and the person is breathing, raise the person’s legs above heart level — about 12 inches (30 centimeters) — if possible. Loosen belts, collars or other constrictive clothing. Allow fresh air circulation.

The trainer also concluded with a mini assessment by asking questions to the students which showed that they had learnt a lot within the session. Each school was gifted with a well detailed poster on all the information trained to the children.

A representative from Green Africa Global Foundation also spoke to the students at each school about the environment, and how its connected to human. In this, he mentioned the importance of each student aiming to keep the environment clean and safe

Rest: make the person rest
Ice: put ice on the injured part to reduce swelling and pain.
Compress: compress the ankle or wrist using a bandage.
Elevate: lastly elevate the injured part to avoid blood flow to hat said part.

This can happen often so it is recommended stand behind the person and slightly to one side. Support their chest with one hand. Give up to five sharp blows between the person’s shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. Check if the blockage has cleared. If not, give up to five abdominal thrusts

Use your thumb and index finger to pinch your nostrils shut. Breathe through your mouth. Continue to pinch for 10 to 15 minutes. Pinching sends pressure to the bleeding point on the nasal septum and often stops the flow of blood.

During this process one should lean forward.

They learnt that the main aim is to stop blood flow. This happens through applying pressure using clean gauze. The second aim should be to prevent the wound from getting infected through cleaning it and making sure they use sterilized gloves.

Wash your hands so they are clean before you help your child. Preventing the wound from getting infected is your first priority. Encourage your child to sit or lie down while you prepare to help them. If the wound is bleeding, take sterile gauze or a clean cloth and press it firmly on the wound until the bleeding stops.

Hold the area gently under cool running water or rub it gently with a clean cloth. Do not use hot water. You can also use bottled water or a saline wound spray to clean the wound. Do not use alcohol, iodine, mercurochrome, hydrogen peroxide or similar agents to clean the wound. They will cause pain and irritation and will not clean the wound any better than clean water.
clean the wound any better than clean water.

If the wound is not too deep but has some dirt or grit, clean a pair of tweezers with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or boiling water and use them to pick out debris. Use an adhesive (sticky) bandage to cover the cut or scrape until it has dried or formed a scab. This will help protect a fresh wound, help it heal, reduce pain and stop the wound from oozing. You can use an antibiotic ointment such as Polysporin to protect against infection and help keep the bandage from sticking to the wound.

Once a cut or scrape has formed a scab, you can leave it open to the air. But if the wound is at risk of becoming dirty or irritated, keep it covered for protection.

Remove clothing from the injured area and in this case stop any bleeding: If they’re bleeding, elevate and apply pressure to the wound using a sterile bandage, a clean cloth, or a clean piece of clothing. Immobilize the injured area: If you suspect they’ve broken a bone in their neck or back, help them stay as still as possible.

This includes first degree of burn which affects the epidermis, the second degree which affects the dermis and lastly third degree which extends to the bones.

For First-Degree Burns (Affecting Top Layer of Skin-epidermis) Cool Burn. Hold burned skin under cool (not cold) running water or immerse in cool water until pain subsides. Protect Burn. Cover with sterile, non adhesive bandage or clean cloth. Treat Pain.  When to See a Doctor. Follow Up.
